Silence, Energy, Movement: The Horse's Language

Edge · Article 14 of 15

There is a language older than any human tongue. Horses speak it fluently. Most humans have forgotten it exists. That language is not made of words. It is made of silence, energy, and movement. To communicate with a horse, you must learn to speak this older language.

The Language of Silence

Silence with horses is active. When you stand beside a horse and do nothing, you are saying: I have no demands right now. This moment belongs to you. In the pause between asking and asking again is where the horse finds what it needs to try differently. Do not fill every silence. Let the horse think. Let the horse process. Rushing creates pressure. Pressure creates resistance. Silence creates space. Space creates willingness. Learn to be comfortable in the quiet. Your horse will thank you.

Energy and Movement

Your energy level tells the horse whether to be alert or relaxed. If you move with sharp, jerky movements, the horse will become sharp and jerky. If you move slowly and smoothly, the horse will slow down. This is true on the ground and under saddle. Practice moving with intention. Each step should have a purpose. When you walk toward the horse's shoulder, mean it. When you step back, step back fully. Indecision in your body creates indecision in the horse. Clarity creates clarity.

Move as if you know where you are going. Not fast. Not urgently. Simply with weight and direction. The horse will follow that. The direction of your shoulders, the angle of your hips, the turning of your head – all of these are signals. If you want the horse to move left, turn your shoulders left. Look left. Step left. The horse will feel that intention and move with you. If you are unclear, the horse will be confused. If you are clear, the horse will be willing.

Putting it all together means becoming a quiet, clear, intentional presence. You do not need to shout. You do not need to use force. You simply need to be present, to feel your own energy, and to move with purpose. The horse will understand. It has been waiting for someone to speak its language.

Start practicing today. Stand with your horse in silence. Feel your breath. Feel the horse's breath. Then, with clear intention, ask for one small thing. A step forward. A step back. A turn. Do not use words. Use your body. Use your energy. Use your movement. You will be surprised at how much the horse already understands. You just have to learn to speak its language.
